Frequently Asked Questions

What would the library do with the property?

Our vision for the property is simple and focused on flexible community use. The current field space would be updated and refreshed for library and community events/concerts. The remainder of the property would be refreshed as library grounds space, with a long-term plan to integrate natural play features, wi-fi connectivity, etc. Details would be added later based on community feedback.

Does the project fit within the mission of the library?

Yes. While the library is in the final stages of drafting its new strategic plan, library users are already familiar with our growth over time from a book repository to a community common space and source for fun and educational events, notary services, employment and health resources, technology and so much more. We strive to eliminate barriers of access for our patrons and create equity of opportunity for all the people we serve. Montcalm County demonstrated its support of our evolving role in the community by overwhelmingly passing our millage increase in 2020.

Can the library afford to maintain/renovate the property?

Yes. The 2020 millage increase, as well as increased interest rates and penal fines, have allowed us to grow with our community and its needs. The library performed due diligence on the property in the fall, and maintenance expenses will have only a small effect and will fit easily into our operating budget. Savings and investment in our general fund over the last 25 years have prepared us fiscally for some long-term development. We anticipate staggering the project over multiple years, and the project would involve zero increase in taxpayers’ expense.

How can the community participate in planning for its use?

If the Board of Education accepts our proposal, next steps would involve gathering extensive community feedback before creating a complete development plan. We encourage current library users and non-users to participate to ensure community needs fully inform our plans.

How can I get involved in the Board of Education’s decision-making process?

Two proposals, including the library’s, will be presented formally at the Board of Education meeting on June 10 at 7pm at the GPS Central Services Building (1414 Chase St.). Please attend if you would like to offer comments during the public comment portion of the meeting!
